Are there any natural remedies for healing a dog's dry, itchy skin?

His hair has fallen out some on his stomach and elbows and knees, and he scratches a lot

Are there any natural remedies for healing a dog's dry, itchy skin?
Has your dog seen a vet to be sure that it is just itchy skin? That would be your first step. There are many things that can make him itchy and have his hair fall out. It could be allergies, ringworm, mange, etc.

If it really is just itchy skin, try adding a tsp of oil to his diet to help coat his skin, or you can try an Omega-3 supplement.

How often are you bathing him? If you are bathing him too much, that can also cause his skin to dry out.
Reply:First check for fleas - a main source of itching. If no fleas, then trying add fish oil supplement to your dog's food. It may not solve your problem if you dog has an allergy, but it helps to strengthen the protective features of the skin to prevent irritants from causing itching or rashes.
Reply:First treat him for fleas. If he still has itchy skin try putting a capsule of fish oil in with his food.
Reply:Are puppy (9months) has a smiler problem, she kept itching all the time, we took her the vets and they gave her some tablets, they seem to help a bit, so maby its worth getting her checked out.
Reply:First you need to go to the vet to determine the cause of the "dry, itchy skin"... it could be ringworm, mange, allergies, thyroid, etc... You need to know what is causing the skin problem before you can fix it.

Then, if it is ringworm, sarcoptic mange, thryoid- it will take medicine from a vet to fix.

If it is allergies or demodectic mange- I suggest raw feeding. If you absolutely can't bring yourself to do this for your dog- the next best thing is HIGH QUALITY, GRAIN FREE canned/wet food that is preferrably 95% meat. The next best is HIGH QUALITY, GRAIN FREE kibble.

google: dog + food + grain free

You can also add a Salmon Oil supplement to get some Omega 3's into his skin/coat. I prefer the one at www.sitstay.com- Kronch. Others I know swear by the Timberwolf Organics Salmon Oil...

That should help if it is food allergies. Good luck.
Reply:Don't bath the dog, feed a good quality dog food, lots of fresh clean water, add Omega 3 oils to the diet, check for fleas. If that doesn't help then you'll have to check with the vet.. Might be mange or something else.
Reply:I use a mixture of Nature's Gate organic Tea Tree %26amp; Blue Cypress human shampoo, Avalon Organics lavendar soap, and Young Living animal scents shampoos. My dogs NEVER have ANY skin rashes, hot spots, or dander. Also, they smell like a dream.
Reply:This is flea season,But Also what you might be feeding can cause hair loss and itching, Check your pet food and see if it has corn, Wheat and soy, A lot pets are allergic to those indgredients as well as food dyes.

For dry itching skin you need to use a medicated shampoo, shure pets has one that is to relieve dry, flacky skin.hot spots, moist exzema and flea dermatitis, this is a natural shampoo will not harm pets or no harsh chemicals.
Reply:i agree with the majority of the answers so far--first the vets to make sure he's not allergic to flea bites. The second thing is a product called Dermatrix (all natural, no Rx). The product can be found online at kalaheath.com. I use it all the time and it works
Reply:What are you feeding your dog?
Reply:With any problem you should start with a vet. It could be food alergy related. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Reply:If your dog hairs keeps dropping, try to feed them eggs (uncooked) daily for at least 10 days. Don't bath you dogs too often as their skin is much more thinner than human. You can also feed them with fish oil, anything with omega (good for skin protection).

At the moment, I used Amway multi- purpose cleaner to bath them as it was strongly recommended by people who own dogs. So far okey, less scratch %26amp; skin diease (as they used to play with each others).

I guess the most natural remedies is still eggs %26amp; dry foods.
Reply:Like everyone else in this thread has suggested, see the vet. My dog had the same problem, and the vet put her on this really expensive oil that didn't do a thing. The dog hated it so much, she wouldn't eat any food that had the oil on it. So instead, I tried a few drops of extra-virgin olive oil, and she liked that much better. Also, forget all the expensive dog shampoos. Use human hair conditioner for extra-dry / damaged hair (try to find something without much of a scent). I use Dove conditioner on my dog, and I haven't had any problems since, (which is amazing since she has to be bathed at least once a week because she gets so dirty).
