What can I give my dog for his flaky, itchy skin?

It seems like he's gotten dandruff or something. He scratches a lot because of it. It's just come about recently. Is there anything I can do or give him to help him. I feel bad for him.

Thanks in advance you guys. :o)

What can I give my dog for his flaky, itchy skin?
If he is an indoor dog - due to cold weather and heaters coming on this is common - his skin is drying out. It could also be related to the food as well. Make sure that you are feeding a good food that is high in Omega 3's - has oatmeal in it. Two, you can put a little corn oil on his food to put the oil back in the diet. Do not bathe all the time as this will strip the natural oils out of his coat. Brushing will help to stimulate the oil glands and distribute the oils throughout his coat. If you need to bathe try sprinkling with corn starch and brushing out this will lift the dirt without drying the skin as traditional bathing would do. The pet stores have a few products that can be added to the food to boost the oil/omega 3 supplements which will also help - check out valleyvet.com or Drs foster %26amp; smith websites for supplements for dry skin. Good Luck!
Reply:What are you feeding your dog?
Reply:Look into what you're using to bath him in, could be drying out his skin. Also, don't bath them too frequently, as it strips their skin of it's natural oils. Fish oil, coconut oil, salmon or olive oil mixed in moderation with the food would be helpful.
Reply:I had the same problem with my golden retriever. One of the girls at work overheard me talking about it, and suggested mixing a raw egg and a little bit of milk and feeding it to the dog (raw) every day until it clears up, then switch to every other day. She used to be a vet's assistant. I'm not sure if it would work with smaller dogs, but it worked wonders on my golden. His coat is much shinier and healthy, and his skin is great!!
Reply:I think maybe some DAndriffed shampoo or take him to the vet
Reply:Make sure its not an allergy first to food, surroundings or some sort of product that has been recently used on him. If its not that then adding olive oil to his food will keep his coat shiny and supple...also helps to repel fleas. They try to bite the skin and they have a hard time penetrating the surface if its oily.

Could also be the weather...if its cold where you are...just like how our skin gets dry. Make sure he has plenty of water to hydrate himself...he might be drinking more actually...If its just dry using petro jelly (small amount) on the spot might help too. I've used it on my dog.
Reply:check out an oatmeal shampoo, make sure that he has a suppliment that contains fish oil or salmon oil. make sure there is no corn in his diet.
Reply:As Misa M said, question # 1 is what are you feeding your dog? Question #2 would be how often are you bathing him?
Reply:First of all, take him to the vets to make sure he isn't allergic to anything (my old cat was allergic to fleas and came out in an itchy, flaky rash when she got bitten!)

Feeding your dog small amounts of fish and/or vegetable oils can help his coat become healthier and shinier. Also, bathing them in a solution of tea tree oil and aloe vera can help sooth skin!

Hope he feels better soon :)
Reply:Flaky, itchy skin is most often diet related. Most commercial feeds are loaded with fillers like corn and wheat, and have artificial colors with additives that read like a chemistry set.

Look at the first several ingredients listed in your dog food brand. Is it corn, grain, and animal biproducts? Yuck.

A terrific dry commercial food is Innova. It's made with quality meat and no cheap fillers. They also have an offshoot called Evo which is also jam packed with nutrition. Avoderm used to be a good choice for dogs with skin problems but I haven't seen the product lately so it may have changed. These feeds are very pricey but definitely cheaper than vet bills! :)
Reply:It could be many things including the food. Science Diet is not a great food, though you would think it is for the price you pay for it. If you look at the ingredients, you will see corn, wheat, corn gluten and/or wheat gluten. They also have by-products in them which is the pieces of the animal, like the beak, feathers, and/or feet - also not good or nutritious. Those ingredients are common ingredients that give dogs allergies and Science Diet doesn't make an allergy formula. If you can try to find a food that doesn't contain those ingredients like Natural Balance, Natural Ultramix, Solid Gold, Innova, or Canidae. These brands have great ingredients and do not contain animal by-products.

Also, if you are bathing your dog a lot, that could also be the cause of dry skin. Some breeds can tolerate frequent baths more than others, however, some breeds in general just have a reputation and the genetics of having dry skin. Try not to bathe him often if you are and like another answerer said, it could be the weather. It is that time of year when the air is drying out and we all are getting dry skin! Good Luck!
Reply:Take him to the vet he might have allergies.
