I bought medicated pet shampoo but it does not seem to help. Thanks!

My mini dachshund has really dry itchy skin, what can I do for him to make it stop?
he needds something with an omega 3 acid in it or fish oils- most vets sell it a big pill ( 3 v cap)that they take once a day- it really helps their fur and skin- anotherthing their is an antihistamine with steroids for dogs who exsessively itch called temaril-p ask about it

your dog may also have food allergies which iis quite common with dogs your vet can help you find a food thats right for him

try oatmeal baths for dogs
Reply:consult a vet.
Reply:if the medicated shampoo doesnt help, then maybe its time to take him to the vet and get something prescribed.
Reply:Try using olive oil on his skin. This sometimes helps my dogs. Put it on him and then rinse it off in about 10 minutes. If this doesn't help in a week, consult your vet.

Sometimes dogs get dry and itchy skin because they are getting bathed too much. If you are bathing him more then twice a month, try cutting down on his baths. This can help too.
Reply:I would contact your Vet.

During the winter months my dogs also get dry skin, I use an oat meal base shampoo's on them and I also give them an egg or an oil base vitamins in with their feed, all this seems to help them during the winter months
Reply:Your puppy may be itching for several reasons. The winter can cause dry skin, just like in humans. He can also be itching if you've bathed him but aren't getting all the shampoo out. Try mixing your shampoo 1/2 %26amp; 1/2 with water so it suds better, and it will also rinse cleaner. You can try oatmeal baking soda shampoo or tea tree oil shampoo. (The tea tree oil is also a fungicide, so I would recommend it.) Also, your baby's skin may be itching due to food allergies. Look into changing his food. Change the meat and the starch source. If your dog is on Chicken and Rice, try lamb or something with oatmeal or potato.

Also, take puppy to vet. Your vet can tell you if there is some skin disorder as well.
Reply:That's what medicated shampoo does; dry the skin.

Buy a good shampoo which you won't find at a grocery store or walmart. A hypoallergenic shampoo oatmeal shampoo and a bottle of the same brand and type conditioner.

Look at his diet.

Is he eating dog food from the grocery store? If so consider a better quality food but you will have to do some looking around in your area. Try small privately owned pet shops, dry goods only pet shops, groomers and online.

I feed Merrick and Nature's Variety and skin problems improved greatly over the grocery store brands.

Then if things don't improve soon make an appt. with a good vet and get some derm work and tests done.

Good Luck.
Reply:I give 3 teaspoons of Norwegian Kelp as a daily supplement for my Am Staff's allergic prone skin. He would stratch himself raw (the vet said he has a grass allergy). He has been on this for 2 weeks and his skin has already healed up! I buy it from my local pet store (Care-Alot) but here is the contact info for the company if you need it: Kelp products of Florida, Inc. 800-932-7089. For your dog you would use only 1 teaspoon daily mixed in with the food. I also give my dog 2000 mg of Flaxseed oil in a capsule, daily. (Walmart has this) This helps with skin conditions, too. A good book is "The Allergy Solution for Dogs" by Shawn Messonnier, DVM. Good luck with your doggie!
