Whats good to use for dry itchy skin OTC?

Cetaphil is a great moisturizer and seems to help with dry skin. If it's really itchy, I would say try Aveeno lotion that has oatmeal in it. It really helps a lot!!

Reply:Gold Bond cream.
Reply:My doctor told me to wash with dandruff shampoo. It worked, don't laugh until you tried it...
Reply:Aveeno oatmeal bath. It is all natural and non-acidic, so it will not irritate. I bathed my children nearly hourly in it when they had chicken pox. It was the only time their skin did not hurt!

If your skin is very severely dry, cracked and broken, use Olive Oil. Regular is fine, does not have to be extra virigin or anything fancy. This is an Italian secret to dry elbows and knees and feet.

Shea butter is also an awesome product, but can be difficult to find a quality product. There are so many cheap labels with inferior product. Try Body Shop or Bath and Body works for the higher quality shea body butter.
Reply:Itchy dry skin can be caused by variouos causes, so the treatment depends on the cause.

If the cause is just dry skin from improper skin care, then skin lotion such as Eucerin and Aveeno would work well. However, you have to think of the cause. Are you using a soap that is too dry? Is the chemical in the soup irritating to your skin? Are you taking bath in too hot of water? Are you bathing too many times a day? Are you washing clothes in detergents that might be irritating to your skin? If the answer is "Yes" to those questions, you need to have some behavior change.

You also have to think of allergic cause. Sometimes people are allergic to stuff like Nickels (found in plated jewelry), chemicals that you put (such as deordorant), animals (cats and dogs), as well as problems such as poison ivy and poison oak. However, those tend to be reddish, even though they can be dry and itchy. Stuff like Benadryl and Claritin would help, but avoidance would be the key.

If you are not sure, try to see a doctor - a dermatologist or an allergist are specialists that might help you.

Reply:Hi:

The best product I have found for dry itchy skin is Aveeno. Great line of products and not priced at "specialty or designer" Lotions bath soaks, natural ingredients (Oatmeal).

Aveeno was most commonly known for their bath soaks for dry itchy skin and to help relieve the itching for someone with chicken pox.

I hope this helps.
