Home Remendy for dog's itchy skin?

Every fall, my dog starts scratching like he has fleas. We took him to the vet once and he said it was just dry skin. Bathe only in oatmeal bath, feed him oatmeal, lamb dog food and put oil in his food - all of which I just started to do a few day ago again. Besides that, does anyone know of any oils or lotions or??? that I can put directly on his skin? There are a few spots that he has sores because he has scratched so much there. Do you think baby oil would help or harm? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

My dog had dandruff and was on fish oil. It took about 2 weeks to see a difference so hang in there.

I think you could put lotion on your dog's sores. The other thing is whether the vet mentioned allergies could be a cause, especially if the itching comes on seasonally. My dog was itching like crazy--vet told me to give her generic Benadryl and the itching stopped w/in days.
Reply:I think you could use some Hydrcortisone cream on his sore bits. It's inexpensive and you can get it from any pharmacy. Works well on eczema which is what this sounds like.
Reply:if its a spot he can't lick, you can use neosporin. Also, check w/your vet, but my dog was on 1/2 a benadryl tablet a day and that seemed to help too.
Reply:Dry skin should be treated from the inside out. Anything that you would put on his skin will make a mess of your house.

What are the fat levels in your dog food? There is a label on the bag that will tell you. Increasing the fat levels by changing brands of food will help if it is only dry skin.

My brand has a fat level of 23%. What does your bag say?

Just remember, if you change brands, do it slowly by mixing old food and new food. Changing fast can upset the dog's stomach.
Reply:SCRATCH !!!!
Reply:My puppy did the same thing and we starting using Gold Bond Powder on her and it worked wonders. Stoped the itch and she was happy. They also make a powder called Ammens. It's a little stronger which works well for the itchier seasons. It's usually in the athelete foot section of Walmart.

The best thing is tea-tree oil
Reply:You can add a wee bit of raw Vitimin E to his food. And you can give him 1/2 a Benadryl
Reply:Get your animal to the vet immediately! It could be mange and it will get so much worse. Let your vet advise you - don't try to treat at home. That is so irresponsible. Your vet knows what's best! Stop with the baby oil too!
Reply:I read on here some time back to use baby shampoo in the bath. I've not tried it Don't know if it works or not.
Reply:I had a collie one time and the breeder told me to use medicated Johnsons baby powder on hair and brush not to many baths as sometimes this will dry out there skin .. Good luck
