My dog has very itchy skin?

what natural remedies can I do to help him from being so itchy?

My dog has very itchy skin?
try doing some reading in the link below to natural home remedies! I love this website!!!
Reply:What type of food are you feeding him? He could be allergic to one of the ingredients, therefore causing itchy skin. Dogs tend to be allergic to corn and/or wheat in poorer quality foods.

Edit: Some allergies develop after a couple of years. It could be that it really is a food allergy. Switching his food to Innova or Canidea definitely wouldn't hurt him, and it may help his skin problems.
Reply:I hate to say this, but you should see your vet first to find out why he is so itchy. My cousin's dog just got allergy testing done and they found out that she is allergic to grass and dust. There is no remedy for her itchiness. If it is fleas, she needs a flea bath. If she has an infection, she needs to be looked at.
Reply:See the vet and he will work out a treatment for that.
Reply:Switch dog food for starters. Just because you haven't changed the food, does not mean the manufacturer has not. Also allergies sometimes may take a long time to show up. Look for something w/o corn or wheat, as these are the most common culprits. Two reasonably priced ones are Canidae and Wellness. Both are made of all natural human grade ingredients.

As a dietary supplement you can try a tsp of olive oil on the kibble, or check the vitamin aisle for fish oil capsules - something with omegs-3 and -6 fatty acids. NO raw eggs as they may contain salmonella.

Infrequent baths (no more than one a month) with a dog shampoo designed for sensitive skin - look for one with oatmeal and/or tea tree oil in it. NO human shampoos as they are the wrong pH and can strip natural skin oils.

Frontline or Advantix - not within 2-3 days either side of the bath however as it requires natural skin oils to distribute the product.

One of my guys suffers every August when the grass goes to seed. Your vet can dispense steroids (prednisone) but this should be used only to get it under control, in EXTREME moderation as they do have harmful side effects. Benadryl tablets can help with the itching so your pet can rest, check with the vet for dosage, depends on dog's weight.
Reply:Fish oil added to the diet can help itchy skin, be sure and dose correctly, ask your vet. Also, it is quite possible that your dog food has changed ingredients. Remember last summer was the summer of bad ingredients found in some Chinese imports. Maybe your manufacturer has changed its formula. Try a food without corn or wheat for awhile.

Your dog may also have developed an allergy to grasses or trees. There is really no way to know without testing. It would be worth it to try the fish oil and change of food first.
Reply:Well it could be any number of things. Allergy, food, fleas, or some kind of infection. You may want to get your vet to do a test. Oatmeal soap is good for itchy skin. Try and see if that helps.
