Westie with itchy skin?

My nine year old westie has suddenly started scratching since we moved back from California to the UK (he spent the first 6 years of his life in the UK). He has never had any allergies and does not have fleas. I've checked his skin and there doesn't seem to be any flakiness but it obviously bothers him for me to touch him.

The only thing I can think of is an allergy to food - can anyone give me some advice. Thankyou

Westie with itchy skin?
It's quite possibly either food or environmental.

Unfortunately all though not common allergies can start anytime.

Most dogs we when run allergy tests are allergic to:

Wheat

Corn

Beef

pork. As i said these are the most common.

You should probably start an exclusion diet with his food and keep him on one food for at least 6 weeks to see if this makes a difference, one we recommend at work before running any allergy blood tests is Wafcol Salmon and Potato.

If this doesn't help you're going to have to start looking into environmental allergies, trees, pollens, grasses, house dust mites.

If your dog is insured you can have a blood test done to isolate any allergens but it does cost approx £350-400!

Apart from blood test these are all things you can try at home, but I would recommend going to see your vet to be sure there is no other underlying cause. They may give him a short course of steroids just to alleviate the itching.

Good luck :-)
