How can I relieve my German shepherd's itchy skin??

I have a 2 1/2yr old German Shephard. He seems to have real bad dry skin, especially durning the winter time. We have tried oils and benadril as well. The vet doesn't seem to be of much help anymore with this either. He is starting to have thinning of his coat in some spots, due to the scratching. Can anyone help??

You could use a good oatmeal shampoo to help relieve the itching. www.dog.com has some good oatmeal shampoos and alot of different conditioners for your dog when you give him a bath. The conditioner will help keep his skin moistened. They also have some special oils that you can put on your dog to keep his skin moisturized.
Reply:You can get a medicated shampoo for dogs made by Hearts. this works pretty good as well as putting some of the hot spot product on some of the big locations. I have also found using a good moisturizing shampoo that you use on your own hair with a good conditioner letting it stand in the coat for about 10 min before rinsing out works wonders. I really love the Aussie hair products. Also a table spoon of corn oil on is dry dog food will help with his coat from the inside out. I did this for a GSG I rescued and he went from a scrubby ugly mess to a beautiful shinny handsome lad.I use this on most all the breeds I have owed throughout the years as well.
Reply:I'd be looking at the brand of food you are feeding first...is it all natural? high end pet? the cheapest ? Food plays an important part in feeding the skin...





switching food might offer the best refief... stay away from foods that contain corn, wheat, soya, sometimes even rice.. opt for oatmeat, or millet as the grain in the food.. grain free foods would actually be the best to try.





Have you allergy tested? Looked for canine lice? fleas? even one single bite can send a dog into scratching fever. What about scartopic mites? even dust mites can cause an uproar..





Shampoos and conditioners can help but there's an underlying issue casing this scratching.





Try a homepathic vet if your allopathic one is giving up...
Reply:try putting fish ooil on his food i raise shepards and this is what i do , check his food if it contains corn change it natures recipe is corn free
