Strange small bug on my skin leaving itchy spots, what can I do.?

These are small blood-sucking bugs that are about the size of a grain of pepper which get on my skin when I take my dog out in the woods during the summer months of July, Augist, and September. They seem to prefer to bite on the top and sides of my feet and the area of my legs under my pants and leave itchy spots the next day. They seem to exhibit tick like characteristics as they prefer sheltered areas to bite. What are these tiny bugs and what can I do to heal the itches?

Reply:Stay out of the woods
Reply:they're probably chiggers.
Reply:chiggers! I hate them too nothing will stop the itch, but insect repellent that contains deet will help keep them from digging in %26amp; biting.
Reply:Sounds like seed ticks. Do they look like this?

Actually, it sounds like you're describing two different bugs. Chiggers do like to bite in sheltered areas like the waistband, underwear, top of the socks, etc., but chiggers aren't really visible to the naked eye. The tiny black bugs you describe are not chiggers. So it sound like you're getting bitten by two different insects. The itching will go away on it's own. Some people get a little relief with hydrocorisone creams.
Reply:they sound like fleas or chiggers. what you can do is get some 1% hydrocortisone cream. this will help with the itching. be careful not to scratch a lot b/c they can ge tinfected easily.
Reply:Well, they sound like lyme ticks but they're not really itchy. People who get Lyme disease usually get flu-like symptoms and then often a "bull's eye" rash within a couple weeks. You would really need quick treatment for this or could face life-long problems.

On the other hand, the symptoms sound more like fleas but I don't think they are in the woods. I thought they just jumped animal to animal.

What part of the country do you live in? Also, do they just leave you or do you have to pull them off?
Reply:We call them "chiggers". . go to a pharmacists, and ask for sulfur. They sell it behind the counter. It's a yellow powder, and powder yourself exspecially around the parts that your clothing is tighter to your skin, (elastic, between legs, under armpits, behind knees, ankles, where socks and shoes fit snug, pants where they button..get the idea?) "chiggers" wont bother you. IF you have already got bitten, then take clear fingernail polish and keep painting over the itchy spots until they go away, that helps relieve it.
Reply:Are they red in color? About the size of a grain of salt or smaller? Sounds like chiggers to me. They do itch so bad. Use a bug spray before going out, you can use baking soda in bath water and soak in it. A good cortisone cream or any anti-itch creme will help but won't make it completely go away. Find somewhere else to walk the dog and then you won't get them.
Reply:AHHHH! SCABIES!

you have body lice. go to the doctor. it's contagious. :)
