"Scabby" and "Baldy" have had this problem before from fleas but I see no evidence of fleas in my house. Scabs are on her back, near the base of her tail. Bald spots are on belly, inner hind legs, and back of front legs. I don't find any sort of living organism living on their bodies. Is there another bug that could cause an alergic reaction similar to flea bites. I want to avoid the vet and treat with something like Advantage but only if it will work. We are in Florida, so maybe there is some critter I'm not familiar with that has infested my cats.
My indoor cat has scabby and itchy skin. The other cat is balding. Both 9-year old, spayed females. ?
There are a lot of things that make your cats itch. Fleas, Mites, and parasites. You should take them to the vet and have them check them.
Reply:sell them to a chinese restaurant
Reply:There are all kinds of skin mites that are invisible to the naked eye. What you have described sounds like some kind of infestation. I would look in to a medicine such as revolution. Revolution is made to kill all bugs, interior as well as exterior. I'm sure that there are other medicines that do the same, but I don't know the names of them.
Reply:It sure sounds like fleas. Sounds like they both have FAD. You need to treat your home with a spray that contains an insect growth regulator (IGR) and treat your pets MONTHLY! One flea can be severely aggravating to a pet with FAD. Also, because fleas are intermediate hosts for tapeworms, I would keep an eye on your pets behind and watch for evidence of tapes

Reply:They might have mange, a serious skin infestation from parasites, take them to the vet asap
Reply:You don't say - are these yellow tabby cats? We had a terrible time with two of ours. They were great pets but they both had scabby and dermatitis that was uncontrollable - we went to many vets and none could help. Steroids didn't help either. Eventually both had to put down. The vets ruled out everything and we spent close to a $1000 on each. It was very sad and I hate to say it we won't get another yellow tabby.
Best of luck
Reply:the prob your cats have is an allergic reaction to fleas even if the ******* dont have them they still think they do, my mum had a dog like that , it needs a jab at the vets to stop them scratching. good luck
Reply:Several Possibilities:
It could be a nutrition problem. If you are feeding them "cheap" food, try switching to Iams or Science Diet.
It could also be stress (I had a cat that went almost completely bald because my live-in boyfriend ignored him but gave lots of attention to his own cat. Boyfriend changed his attitude, and the cat's hair grew back!).
Also, I currently have a cat that gets baldy patches occasionally which grow back and fall out again. Vet could not find any problems. Cat seems healthy and is declared so by the vet, so I don't do anything about it.
Scabby sounds like a skin condition. You might want to pony up for the vet.
Reply:Fleas can cause all kinds of skin rashes because the bites usually itch for weeks.
1. When we moved into our home both of our cats invited 100's of fleas into their fur. We did not know that the presvious owner's cat had fleas - we did not see fleas right away, and then the fleas saw our kitties. It took two rounds of drops behind their heads to kill off all fleas and eggs in the home.
2. One of my cats has lost all of her fur on her belly. The Vet diagnosed this as being "dermitis". She does not itch nor scratch, she just has a bald belly. The medication prescribed for this condition can cause "diabetes", and I decided not to give this to her any more. She is fat, she is happy, she is an indoor cat and does not need to wander around in the snowbanks.
3. Get your cats checked out by a reputable Vet.
Good luck and good health to all
