My inside cat has dry, itchy skin, what might be wrong?

Fred is nearly 15 and he is constantly scratching until he makes little scabs, especially around the neck and tail. It 's not fleas. I'm wondering if it is his diet?

He is normal in every other way.

Could be a food allergy. There are special "skin condition" foods that you could look into. My mom's 10 y.o. cat developed a lot of allergy problems suddenly and it seems to mainly be a food allergy, but not to anything specific which can make it tough to manage. Good luck.
Reply:Maybe you shouldn't have opened him up then. lol.
Reply:Hiya, my Mum has a cat with something similar, hers turned out to be a flea allegy. Now although she doesn't have fleas it doesn't stop them trying to bite when she's outside, thus causing the allegy. If it's not that then maybe a trip to the vet? I hope Fred's feeling better soon :-)
Reply:Might be the weather.

In winter animals skin becomes scaly and dry. You can rub your cat down with a fabic softener sheet to help keep moisture in.
Reply:Let me guess ........ dry food right? Yup it is the diet.

Please read the urls I am putting in here.

Fred is also at the age when dry fed cats become diabetic or have bad UTI's that cause blockages and death, kidney failure and more and more.

YOu can also add a tsp of sunflower oil or melted butter in you cats food daily to help with the itchy skin.
Reply:It could be low humidity due to lots of dry heat coming out of the vents since it is winter. You can get a little tool to check your humidity level at Target or Wal-mart. If your humidity is below 40%, you might want to try getting a humidifier. The skin can get dry from a lack of moisture in the air during the winter. One other sign it might be due to lack of humidity is if the cat appears to have dandruff. I'm not sure if is this is what is going on with your cat, but it might be worth trying. Good luck!
