My dog has a had a very stubborn case of what my vet calls 'th creeping crud', that itchy scabby condition dogs get at times. I have gotten rid of most of it (with medicated shampoo my vet prescribed) but she chewed her tail raw a couple of days ago and she has been occasionally standing or walking with her tail and butt twisted toward her front, almost like a spasmadic thing. I'm wondering if anyone has seen anything like this. She seems fine otherwise. I'm taking her to the vet monday.
Itchy skin? Neurological problem? My dog keeps bending her tail and butt toward her front.?
ITCHY BUTT!!
Try bathing her down with Allermyl, a mediacted anti-itch shampoo.
Better yet, give her a 4mg chlor-trimetron tablet (generic little yellow pill for human allergies). The ingredient is chlorphenalamine or something like that. Our vet prescribed it for our schnauzer...works wonders, she doesnt chew her feet when she's on it.
Reply:Maybe her anal glands need squeezed. They can become painfully swollen. Ask the doctor to check them.
Reply:Yeah she is going insane she is so itchy.. trying to get her rear around so she can scratch and get to it... You need to help her out.. Your vet obviously isn't helping.. You should get a new vet. You should check your dog food, you should add Omega 3 oils to the diet. and you should give her a bath in something gentle and soothing.. Keep her groomed and clean. While you are at the new vet, get him to check the anal glands.
Reply:Lot of dogs this time of year get this. It;'s the change of season and the dogs skin get very dried out. I don't think it anything neurological but that it is very irritating to her. so she is continually trying to get at it. she needs help from your vet. I would not feel comfortable to tell you to give her any human meds unless your vet has ok'd it. Some dogs have a very adverse reacitons to human drugs. Overdosing can happen too.
I would suggest you speak to your vet and ask for a skin scraping to see exactly what is going on with her skin. This way he (your vet) can see exactly what will be the best thing to give her too.
Good luck!
Reply:okay well i have a lab that does that head and butt thing and he does it because he wants attention whenever he does it he is playing he also did the chew his butt raw things and we put some olive oil in his food because our vet told us to do that and it worked very well and it got rid of his dandruff too. but whenever he does the head and butt walk thing and hes just cute when he does it and he wags his tail and once i pet him he just stops and flops down and hes ready to play i hope you have the same luck and its not sick.
Reply:Definitely get her anal glands checked. It very well could be the problem.
Also, you might add a salmon oil gelcap to her meal once a day. Have him also check for D-mange.
