My dog has terribly dry skin. It doesn't help that she sits in front of any possible heat source either! What can i do to help alleviate her dry skin? I've tried putting raw egg on her food and I've tried giving her vitamin e pills. Anyone have any suggestions? She's half lab, which I've heard are notorious for skin conditions.
My dog has itchy skin?
1. Bathe your dog as little as needed to keep its coat clean.Shampoo residue is a major cause of skin irritation for dogs. After rinsing, towel dry your dog, and avoid using any coat finishers or blow dryers, which can also cause skin irritation in a sensitive dog.
2. Brush your dog often to remove dead hair and dander.
3. If bathing is necessary, use a moisturizing shampoo made for dogs. Their pH is different from ours, so don't be tempted to use a human shampoo- it is much to harsh for their skin.
4. Follow a bath when necessary with a moisturizing rinse made for dogs and their special needs.
5. Don't forget that healthy hair and skin comes from within. Use a good quality, name brand food and consult with a veterinarian about the addition of fatty acid supplements which can make for healthier, glossier hair.
Warning signs that your pet has more than dry skin
Pets scratch for many reasons, including allergies, parasites, or infection. All of these conditions may appear to be "dry skin" to the pet owner, but they actually require treatment by a veterinarian. Attempting home remedies may only complicate the problem or delay treatment.
Reply:Do not give her raw egg, it will constipate and kill her within one day!! I take it that when you talk of heaters, you are in a cold area. Well, we all have dry skin in cold areas, our cats itch allot in this cold weather, also depends if your pet has an alergy, Take it to the vet. Sometimes a simple shot of what the doc decides and maybe some oral med in the food, don't play doc yourself, you will just kill your beautiful pet. One thing you have not mentioned, the age of the dog, and if it is outdoors or been around any other pets, dogs or ran in parks etc. Does your dog have skin leisions? Depending where you live it could be many things, take it to the Vet, that is the best thing you can do for your friend. I would like to add, if you shampoo the dog in the winter, use the stuff from the vets office, it is soap free and a moist heat unit in the house don't hurt.It could be alergies too, Good Luck and God Bless!...Dolly
Reply:I have a lab and he DOES have skin problems!! I took him to the vet and found out he was allergic to his dog food. The eggs you have put in her food may be a cause of it. My lab is on a strict diet of lamb and rice food, even his treats. The vet said alot of itchy dry skin comes from food allergy, which can consist of beef, beef by-products, chicken and chicken by-products, etc. Try it, I use Nutro Lamb %26amp; Rice, from Pets Mart-- it has NO by products and his skin cleared up in about a month or so. Also, remember to check your heartworm pills, they can be allergic to the beef chew ones, you may have to switch to the no favor tabs. Hope this helps!! :)
Reply:Talk to a Vet. S lot of times dogs have allergies or just dry skin. Keep your dog moisturized.
Reply:Raw egg will not kill your dog. Many people feed the BARF diet, wich is an all raw diet, and eggs are one of the things used for skin.Canned salmon is a good source of fatty acids for your dog.Never feed raw salmon,it contains a parasite, that while harmless to humans will kill a dog.
Reply:There are many reasons she could be getting the dry skin - I'd check some of the resources listed here: http://healthy-dog.fanaticshome.com to get a better idea of what's causing it and then how to fix it.
