the pool water is chemically on target. does he just swim too much?
Golden retriever has dry, flaky, itchy skin from swimming all the time. what to do?
There are a couple of things that could really be the issue. Is the dry skin coming from swimming, ie, do you not see it during the winter months when he isn't in the pool?? Regardless, I would first add some fish oil. You want the Omega 3's to total 600mg for the day with 360mg EPA and 240 DHA. Also, you may want to try a good spray on or leave in coat conditioner to help with the dry hair. Imagine if you swam every day without conditioning your hair! In addition to the fish oil, or if you are seeing the dry skin year round, you may want to try NuVet an all natural supplement that is WONDERFUL! If the fish oil and conditioner doesn't help than you may want to try something like Stop Itch through Wendal's Herbs; http://www.horsehealthusa.com/cgi-local/... to help.
Reply:Did you rinse him off after he swam????
You have to rinse your dog off with clean water after he swims. I do this every time my Golden's go for a swim and their skin is fine. You'll need to get a good oatmeal moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and get his coat back into shape. If you swim him again please rinse him off with clean water from your hose to get the chlorine out of the coat and off the skin.
Reply:No, the answer is call your vet. and he will give a treatment for it known as...Oh! sorry forgot the name. Ok mate .......
Reply:Goldengal is right on target.
It also isn't a bad idea to soak him down with the hose before he goes into the pool too. If he is already wet with clean water, he will soak up less chlorinated water.
Reply:give him some omega 3 oil also i put bacon grease on my dogs food every so often just to give them the oils they need to keep the skin and coat the way it should be also if he was a shorter haired dog i would tell you to spritz him with Avon s skin so soft this helps alot and keeps the pest off him at the same time
