My sweetie doggies got the itchy dry skin, what's the best thing for it???

I have a 2 year old boston terrier, and I'm guessing because of the colder dry air he's getting itchy flaky skin. I gave him a bath yesterday and then this morning his rear was covered with flakes. He keeps itching, but no red spots or bumps or cuts are on him, so like I said I think it's just dry. What's the best thing I can do for this???

Could be suffering from a food allergy or could be from the sudden change of weather. A food that is good for dogs suffering from food allergies is "Wellness fish and sweet potato" formula. Try adding fish oil pills and vitamin E to his food. That should help with the dry skin.
Reply:Neutrogena T-Gel

Tried it on my pome when she had dry skin and it worked great!
Reply:butter
Reply:Check with your vet.

Might it be an allergic reaction to something?
Reply:put a lil vegitable oil ir like bacon grease on they food , it'll help :)
Reply:Oatmeal shampoo is very good for dry skin.
Reply:Put a little fish oil in his food.
Reply:i have a boston terrier

Reply:Fish oil supplements you can get from the vet, in addition to the topical treatments works great!
Reply:try getting a different shampoo for the dog, if it continues, the dog could be allergic to the food it is eating so try switching food, i have a shi tzu at my house that has dry skin and he would scratch until he bled so we had to change his food.
Reply:they have treats at the pet story for coat and skin...well at least they do for cats. It's really helped my older cat with his dander and dry skin..made his coat all shinny again. go to the pet store and ask a clerk if they have treats for dogs that help their skin and coats.
Reply:feed them more fat in their diet and more garlic. also, don't bathe so often, it makes their natural oils dry up. you can put some skin balm on the brush and brush them down.
Reply:My shihtzu had the same problem and it turned into very sore dry itchy skin. I went to the vet and they gave me ointment for the affected areas and special shampoo. It's really hard to see the little guys in misery. good luck.
Reply:try not to bath him too often, too many bath will give him this problem too, try a raw egg on his food about once a week, also you can give him codliver oil that really help, but his breath will stick.
Reply:Bathe your dog as little as needed to keep its coat clean.

Brush your dog often to remove dead hair and dander.

If bathing is necessary, use a moisturizing shampoo made for dogs. Their pH is different from ours, so don't be tempted to use a human shampoo- it is much to harsh for their skin.

Follow a bath when necessary with a moisturizing rinse made for dogs and their special needs.

Don't forget that healthy hair and skin comes from within. Use a good quality, name brand food and consult with a veterinarian about the addition of fatty acid supplements which can make for healthier, glossier hair.
Reply:You say you bathed him the day before this condition began. Is this a shampo you've used before? Did you use any kind of conditioning rinse? Are you sure you rinsed off absolutely all of the shampoo? If you didn't get it all rinsed off, that could be a reaction.

Are you feeding a high-quality dog food? Nutrition is a big part of skin conditions. You can add a little brewers yeast (if it doesn't have an allergy to it - some dogs do), garlic, and cod liver oil to his food to improve his skin or switch to something like Nutro or NutroMax (lamb and rice or chicken and lamb and rice formula) which is recommended for improving "coat."
Reply:it sounds like Atopica Dermatitus

my little puppy has it too

this sounds gross but smell the area if it smells a little funky thats what it could be

i had to give My puppy medication it was very expencive but a months supply has gotten him undercontrol

also a medicated shampoo helps realy well

i also went to a health food shop that had all alternate creams and got a natural dermatitus cream that helped also

Atopica (google it ) is like a FLEA bitten dermititus, basicly you puppy may be allergic to fle bites even if you get rid of the fleas the skin is still realy iratated so they scratch it and then it spreads and yeah its like a visious circle

make sure you keep up with fle treatments and stop the itchie skin once that heals it will be fine

good luck and giv ur puppy a cuddle from me :)
Reply:High Quality Food and Omega-3 Fatty Acids (products available at your vet) or DermCaps (from PetsMart, etc... alos a vet product)
Reply:Dampen his coat and massage lotion into his skin. Unscented lotion is best.
