Itchy skin (not dry skin) during pregnancy?

I'm 36 weeks pregnant and for the past three or four weeks my skin has been itching like mad. I've tried lotions, creams, oatmeal, benadryl, hell even perscription anti-hystamines and NOTHING has even come close to being helpful. If it were just my abdomen, I think I could handle that, but this is ALL of my skin, all of the time. Anyone have any suggestions? I've talked to my doc about it and she just tells me it's caused by the pregnancy and will go away when I have the baby. But I've still got 4 weeks to go and it's effecting my sleep. Any suggestions?

I had the same thing. I saw three dermatologist and no answers. I tried every medicine and over the counter cream....It finally stopped for me around 35 weeks...but I had mine from about 19 weeks till then. I was literally going out of my mind. The itching kept me up at night. I was irritable because of the itching. Once I was put on maternity leave because of stress at work...the itching and rash went away...amazing huh?

Good luck....I know how miserable that feeling is!
Reply:Have you tried calomine lotion? That's something different. Also try soaking in a warm bath when you start to itch like crazy, and try to to itch, i know it's hard, but it'll just make it worse! Good luck!
Reply:i used cetaphil mosturizing cream and it works. I usually applied Dove lotion on before. You can try that because it definately worked for me. Oh and drink a lot of water...it helps too!
Reply:Did your doctor check you for cholestasis? My friend had that during her last trimester. Here's a link that may help: http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnan...
Reply:Hey Mom, its because you are getting bigger. So, if this is your first baby, relax, because you wont get this chance later on, with other kids running around. If you have the cash, go to bath and body works, or if you dont have or dont want to spend that much, head to walmart and goto the bath isle. Find yourself a package of Aveno Oatmeal bath, or something like that. Also pick up some other kinds of nice bath products, that state they soothe skin.

Enjoy some nice bath time, to moisturize your stretching skin. You might need to do this once a day or more, and it really will help. Be sure to bring some baby books, or whatever kind of book to pass the time. Light a few candles, etc. Even doing this before bed may help you sleep better too!

Next tip: Don't make water too warm! Its not good to overheat baby, and if the waters too warm, it'll just make your skin dryer, and worsen the problem.

This is easier and more enjoyable than doing the lotion all the time, especially if you don't have help rubbing it all in.

*Note: Bathing while pregnant is totally ok! As long as your water hasn't broke, bath water can not enter the uterus. Just be careful not to slip. Keep a dry handtowel close by so you can get up with dry hands. Or have daddy close by to help you get out. (I know I needed help, I was huge!)
Reply:You should go see a different doctor because you shouldn't be itching all over like that. There is a liver condition that is caused by pregnancy that will make you itch like that.

Reply:girl i know exactly what your going through it sounds like pupps to me is it a raised rash? all over as well and does itching only make it worse. i had a severe case of pupps all over my body and ending up going to the er cuz noone would listen to me and like u nothing helped i tried everything. so the dr prescribed me hydrocortizone cream which i put on 2- 3 times daily, i also took benadryl cuz i couldnt sleep and night and he also prescribed prednazone ( sp) which is a steroid, they only presrcibe if ur severe. it helped lil by little and now its all gone.the best part none of it effects the baby. if u have to go to the er and tell them what i was prescribed it will help u. i hope this helps and i hope u feel better hun
Reply:Yeast? Pregnancies tend to bring that on...

Try soaking in a warm bath with 2 cups water softener salts (not epsom salts). Add 5 drops lavender essential oil... the lavender oil should be safe enough for pregnancy, but if you don't feel comfortable with doing it, don't of course. ;) But the salts will draw out that yeasty-beasty... I have that problem, the itching, and when it "sets in", I get in that bathtub with the salts and lavender and soak... I also have "aching" in my hip joints that seems to be part of this too (the ache and the itch happen simultaneously always, never alone)... and it gets rid of the whole thing in a few days. Soak for 20 minutes each time you do it, and you can do it more than once per day if it makes ya feel good! ;)

*Then* put on that oatmeal lotion. ;)
